5th Semester Project

The purpose of this study was to develop an interactive physical product, where the goal was to make everyday life easier and overcome stress. A prototype was created to encourage the user to relax more.

The design process and development of the prototypes were mostly explorative. During the project we developed both low-fidelity prototypes and a functional prototype.

Background

Stress occurs on a daily basis and causes the brain to react. But if the things that cause the stress continues, the reaction can have a negative effect on the body.

The type of stress we are dealing with in this project is the negative daily stressors. The daily stressors are minor stressors in the everyday life. These stressors are not severe, but in order for them not to become just that, the user need to be aware of the stressors.

One of the ways to cope with stress is to focus on taking time for oneself and relax.  As so, the motivation for the project is to gain insight in how to design a product that can improve the everyday life of a user and help them slow down and relax, as a mean to overcome stress.

Concept

The product contains three main functionalities; sound, light and scent, as we agreed on creating a setting where relaxation is the main point. The way the product works is by placing color-coded stones belonging to each function. When the stone is placed a certain function is activated. There is the possibility of activating all functions simultaneously, by activating two functions or just one function, depending on the preference.

In addition to the three main
features, the product is also has a timer showing the time set for relaxation. Furthermore, a volume control is an integral part of the product, in the form of a turntable that scales up or down the sound, depending on the direction of rotation.

Persona

Results

Since the current prototype has not been tested with users, it cannot be concluded whether users will use the product as well as whether it adds value to their lives. However, the purpose of building the prototype has been to encourage the users to relax and take a break from their stressful everyday lives. We assume that it adds value by consisting of things that are known to help people relax, such as listening to soothing sounds and music, setting an atmosphere and aromatherapy. This would, of course, need to be tested with users in order to be clarified.
